Reporting Arrests, Etc. – Employees who are arrested, have been informed that he or she is a subject/suspect in a criminal investigation, issued a criminal
summons, issued a notice to appear, issued a traffic citation(s), issued a civil citation, have their driver license suspended or have an active warrant(s) or
capiases against them, will immediately notify the Sheriff in writing via the chain of command of the event and circumstances involved. A copy of the
Inter-Office Correspondence will be forwarded to the Office of Professional Standards by the employee’s Division Commander or Chief of Staff for areas

kbehl@alachuasheriff.orgWe use metal ribbons and corresponding circular pins. That way there is a uniform option and a civilian attire option. Employees can wear either depending on how they are dressed. This also allows civilians who are not issued a uniform to wear their award for those types of awards civilians are eligible to receive. kbehl@alachuasheriff.orgOur pursuit policy allows for pursuits involving forcible felonies and DUI’s where the person’s driving pattern was dangerous PRIOR to coming into contact with law enforcement. The caveat is that the officer may not know what is causing a dangerous driving pattern, but in a case where someone was suicidal, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, all of these scenarios may cause a dangerous driving pattern prior to contact with law enforcement. So I can see where our agency MAY allow for a pursuit in those circumstances. Again, the litmus test is going to be – does the dangerousness of the person’s driving outweigh the dangers of a pursuit? Food for thought.

Criminal Conduct – Employees will obey all federal and state laws, city and county criminal ordinances. Violations of criminal statutes or ordinances, the
filing of a deferred prosecution agreement, indictment or information or an arrest and/or conviction can be cause for disciplinary action. Employees will not interfere in any criminal investigation and will report all violations or potential violations of the law.See attached.

kbehl@alachuasheriff.orgWe have an Office of Professional Standards (OPS) AKA – Internal Affairs. They are responsible for Internal Affairs Investigations that rise to the level of being investigated by IA – plus a number of audits, such as a Vehicle Crash Review Committee, the K-9 Audits and Inventories, the Evidence and Property Inventories, they attend drug destructions, they supervise the Early Warning Invention System, are responsible for Reasonable Suspicion Drug Testing, In-Custody Death Investigations, Officer-Involved Shootings, (Administrative Role – not FDLE Criminal). Our Policy and Accreditation Unit also falls under the Office of Professional Standards.
