For those of you with dedicated traffic units, how many of you require the traffic unit members to obtain/maintain motorcycle certification for appointment or continued appointment to the traffic unit?
Also – are there any agencies that operate motor units as a specialty team rather than as an integral traffic unit component?
Thank you,

We have a hybrid program currently. The Motor Unit mostly operates as a special team, but there are some of the traffic units that are on the Motor Unit, so the Traffic Unit does have a motor component, but it’s not a requirement to be on the Traffic Unit.
Our traffic unit members do not have to have motorcycle certification to be a member of the traffic unit. Our motor unit is an integral traffic unit component. I’ve attached our SOP as well.
Per our Special Ops Sgt: We require our motor units to carry valid Florida Motorcycle Endorsements and complete the LEO Motor School. They have scheduled training once a month. Our motor unit is an integral traffic unit that assists patrol.

We do not require traffic unit members to obtain/maintain motorcycle certification to stay within the traffic unit.
That being said, we have traffic unit members who are cross trained as motor officers and must maintain their certification to stay as a cross trained member (Reserve Motors).
