ParticipantHello Heather:) Below is what our volunteer policy states. So sorry we couldn’t be of more help!
Student Intern Program
1. This program consists of student interns assigned to specific roles within the agency, who are actively enrolled in an institution of higher learning and are seeking or considering a degree in a criminal justice field. {CFA 2.09, 13.01}
a. The program is designed to expose student interns to different jobs by temporarily assigning them to non-sworn duties within various departments of the agency. The student intern shall be the primary beneficiary of the arrangement which is determined by the Seven Point Primary Beneficiary Test as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor.
(1). The authority and latitude granted to the student intern is stated in the job description of the position he/she is completing the internship for (e.g. Forensic Technician), and controlled by his/her immediate supervisor.
(2). Student interns shall perform their duties under the direct supervision of a full time member.
b. Student intern positions are non-paid and not entitled to benefits.
c. As approved by the Sheriff or designee, a student intern’s schedule shall be determined based on the respective school’s program requirements, and the needs of the respective unit. A student intern’s schedule shall not exceed 40 hours per week.2. Student interns may participate in the agency’s ride along program but may not be assigned duties that would require them to take any type of law enforcement action. {CFA 2.09, 13.01}
