    Happy Halloween,

Since the implementation of TASER’s, I’ve been told some agencies have gone away from the expandable baton. I’ve been asked to learn if agencies are still issuing expandable baton’s to officers and if they are required to carry them on the duty gear.

    Many thanks,

    Good Morning,

We still issue expandable batons, but do not require them to be carried. Same for OC Spray.

    Take care,
    Wendy

Clearwater Police Department had removed expandable batons from use in 2023.

Below is what our policy states. Hope this is helpful:)

    3. Impact Weapons (expandable/straight batons and/or other approved devices)
    a. The issued expandable baton shall be carried and utilized only as authorized.
    b. Unless exempt, sworn uniform members shall carry the issued expandable baton when engaged in any uniformed assignment.
    c. Members who are issued DFSGs have the option of not carrying their expandable batons.
    d. Members assigned to Specialty Units (e.g., Emergency Response Team) may only carry their alternate approved baton when engaged in training or on assignment.
    e. When utilizing approved Impact Weapons, all strikes shall be targeted to major muscle areas such as the forearms, thighs, or calves.
(1). Strikes to these areas reduce the risk of permanent injury to a subject.
(2). A subject’s head, neck, throat, spine, and clavicle shall not be intentional targets for an Impact Weapon strike, unless the member is justified in using Deadly Force.

    God bless

Yes we have them, even with our tasers, and they are issued to every officer

We give our officers the option to carry the expandable baton if they have their Taser. “The police baton (impact weapon) is a part of the issued equipment
and is an optional carry on the utility belt by sworn members in uniform. If a member chooses not to wear a baton, he or she will have the weapon in their assigned vehicle in a readily assessable area.”

Good morning! Yes, we do, and it is optional. Our policy is the following:
The baton is an optional piece of equipment that patrol officers may carry while on-duty.
Officers must be properly trained in the use of the baton prior to being allowed to carry or use it.

    Hope this helps!
