We are looking for a policy for items that are taken in and submitted into our evidence technician labeled “Safekeeping.” How do agencies handle these items and/or what is written in your policy?

    Hello,

This is an excerpt from our policy:
Safekeeping: Items turned in to the Sheriff’s Office for safekeeping must be reclaimed within sixty (60) days. Safekeeping items remaining after sixty (60) days will be disposed of as specified in Florida Law. Supervisor approval is required before any item is turned in for safekeeping.

    Hope this helps!

We follow FSS 705.103. The owner of the item is notified (we send a postcard) and the item is held for ninety days. If we are not contacted by the owner in that time frame, the item will be destroyed.

    Thanks!
