    Hello,
We are inquiring if your agency uses someone in your agency not associated with the evidence unit to do destructions. Best practices from IACP, and other accrediting bodies suggest having someone not associated with the evidence unit to verify destructions. We are doing this, but we are curious if other agencies are using only evidence personnel for destructions. Could you put a yes or no if you use a disinterested third party (such as IA, a detective, or officer) to verify your evidence destructions at your agency that has no inside access or are a supervisor to the evidence unit.

    Thank you,

    From our Unit Manager:
Other than the firearms/drug burns where SCSO destroys them for us, we are responsible for our own destructions. It does require at least two persons be involved and sign off on it (which is a measure to try to eliminate one person walking away with something), and we try to destroy as much as we can while we’re under the cameras (that part is not in policy, it’s just our preference).
