Below is what we included in our agency’s Evidence Policy:
Provisions for maintaining the integrity of evidence in the event of temperature change detrimental to the evidence stored in either the refrigerated storage area, freezer storage area, and/or refrigerated lockers are as follows: {CFA 27.08B}
(1). Audible temperature alarms are activated for refrigerated storage.
(2). Maintenance is notified via text message for refrigerated storage alarm only. If temperature alarms for the refrigerated lockers or freezer storage are activated, notification is sent to the Information Management Services (IMS) Section, the Evidence Unit Supervisor, and the Crime Scene Section Manager via email, and the Evidence Unit on-call phone is notified via text message.
(3). If power outage, a backup generator for the Evidence Unit is activated.
(4). If malfunction or ongoing power outage, emergency repair services are requested, and if necessary, Evidence Unit Specialists shall transfer evidence into a secure temporary storage area while the refrigerators or freezers are being repaired.
